What is Vitofyllin?
Vitofyllin is a medicine for elderly dogs suffering from Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (dementia). It is designed to improve and assist circulation to the brain, heart, and skeletal muscles. It comes in the form of tablets and is available in a variety of doses. Vitofyllin should be taken as directed by your vet. Propentofylline has shown to be an antiarrhythmic effect and can be used to help in the management of dogs with irregular heartbeats.
After this treatment, dog owners may notice a range of improvements including increased cognitive function, alertness, and willingness to exercise when this has not previously been the case. If your dog weighs less than 2.5kg, is pregnant, breeding, or hypersensitive to propentofylline – Vitofyllin’s active ingredient – then this product should be avoided.
Rare reactions to Vitofyllin include cardiac disturbance, vomiting at the commencement of treatment and allergic reactions (urticarial). Treatment should be stopped if any of these symptoms are observed. In the event of your dog receiving an overdose of Vitofyllin, then you should contact your vet immediately for appropriate treatment.
This product is only suitable for the treatment of animals and should never be used on humans. It should be kept away from children out of sight and out of reach. In the event of this product being ingested by humans, then medical attention should be sought immediately.
How does Vitofyllin work?
Vitofyllin works by improving the flow of blood to a dog’s brain. This increases the amount of oxygen available to the brain independently of its glucose demand and can improve its cognitive function. In older dogs, this may increase willingness to exercise and exercise tolerance. Vitofyllin is taken orally, usually in the form of pills.
What are the benefits of Vitofyllin?
Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome can be a debilitating condition. Vitofyllin may reduce its symptoms (including confusion and disorientation) and allow increased cognitive function, alertness, and tolerance for exercise.
Is Vitofyllin Available Over The Counter?
Vitofyllin is not available over the counter and requires a veterinary prescription.
Dosages will vary depending on the size of the dog receiving the prescription.
